GF Glass Fiber Capsule Filter

Product ID: gf-capsule-filter|Glass Fiber

Glass fiber (GF) capsule filter designed specifically for high viscosity and high impurity loading fluids. It uses ultra-fine glass fiber media and has a unique three-dimensional deep structure, providing extremely high dirt holding capacity and colloid interception capabilities. It is suitable for serum prefiltration, fermentation broth clarification and gas impurity removal, effectively extending the life of the terminal filter.

  • Ultra-fine glass fiber media
  • 3D depth filtration structure
  • Very high dirt-holding capacity
  • Strong colloid capture
  • Extends downstream final-filter life
Micron rating
0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 5.0, 10, 20 µm nomin
Max operating temperature
Continuous service to 60 °C
Effective filtration area
About 0.5–0.7 m² per 10" media section
Max forward differential pressure
Forward 4.0 bar (58 psi) @ 25 °C
Serum pre-filtration
Fermentation broth clarification
Gas contaminant removal
High-viscosity fluid filtration
High-load fluid pre-treatment
Filter media / membrane
Ultrafine glass fibre depth media with a three-dimensional pore network that tightens through the thickness; particles are held across the whole depth instead of piling on the surface, so dirt-holding capacity far exceeds a membrane of the same rating — especially with viscous feeds and colloids
Support & drainage layers
Polypropylene support and drainage layers; the glass fibre is retained between polypropylene mesh so fibres cannot shift or shed at high flux
Body material
One-piece polypropylene shell and end caps, thermally welded throughout with no adhesives; no metal parts in the wetted path
Seals / O-rings
The body is thermally welded and has no main O-ring; port gaskets in silicone or EPDM, with FKM available for aggressive fluids
Micron rating
0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 5.0, 10, 20 µm nominal; usually installed to protect a downstream sterilising-grade filter
Effective filtration area
About 0.5–0.7 m² per 10" media section; small capsules run about 0.02–0.2 m². With depth media, service life is set by dirt-holding capacity rather than area
Inlet / outlet connections
Inlet/outlet 1/4"–1-1/2" with hose barb, sanitary tri-clamp, threaded and quick-connect options; the connections are moulded into the same polypropylene body
Hold-up volume
Small (≈0.02 m²) ≈30 mL; mid (≈0.1 m²) ≈90 mL; 10" class (≈0.7 m²) ≈250 mL. Most of the hold-up is recoverable by blowing down through the open drain
Vent & drain
One polypropylene vent valve on top and one drain valve underneath, both hand-operated; the vent can take a hydrophobic membrane cap to keep the sterile boundary intact
Max operating temperature
Continuous service to 60 °C; withstands 121 °C saturated steam for sterilisation cycles
Max forward differential pressure
Forward 4.0 bar (58 psi) @ 25 °C; 1.0 bar (15 psi) @ 60 °C; reverse 2.0 bar (29 psi) @ 25 °C
Recommended change-out ΔP
A single-use capsule cannot be backwashed or regenerated. Depth media climbs in ΔP gradually rather than spiking, so change out at 1.5 bar (22 psi) or when flow has fallen to half the initial value
Sterilisation
Autoclave at 121 °C for 30 min, up to 3 cumulative cycles recommended; steam-in-place, EtO and gamma sterilisation are also available
Wetting & flushing
Glass fibre is hydrophilic and wets out with aqueous feeds directly; purge the air through the vent before start-up. When used as a prefilter, change it together with the final filter so a breakthrough upstream never dumps its load on the final stage
Extractables & cleanliness
Flushed with purified water to conductivity and TOC limits before shipment; extractables, endotoxin (< 0.25 EU/mL) and TOC batch data available on request
Integrity test
Nominally rated depth media, so bubble-point integrity testing does not apply; flow, ΔP and fibre shedding are sampled batch by batch
Packaging
Individually double-bagged, assembled and sealed in a cleanroom; gamma pre-sterilised units available
Regulatory & validation
Wetted materials meet USP Class VI biological reactivity and 21 CFR 177 food-contact requirements; material certificates and batch test reports can be supplied with the shipment

Note: actual compatibility and service life depend on chemical concentration, temperature, flow, differential pressure, upstream contamination load and housing design. Validate under your real process conditions.

Where it fits

A glass fibre capsule sits ahead of a sterilising-grade final filter: serum pre-filtration, fermentation broth clarification, or any feed with a heavy solids load or high viscosity. Its job is not to make the liquid sterile but to take out the bulk of the load, so the far more expensive final filter downstream does not blind after two or three batches.

Key characteristics

Ultrafine glass fibre forms a three-dimensional pore network that tightens through the thickness, so particles are held across the whole depth instead of piling on the surface. That is why its dirt-holding capacity far exceeds a membrane of the same rating, and why it works so well on colloids and viscous feeds. The fibre layer is retained between polypropylene mesh, so nothing shifts or sheds at high flux.

Depth media is nominally rated and bubble-point integrity testing does not apply to it. Service life is set by dirt-holding capacity rather than membrane area, so the comparison that matters at selection is how much solids it can absorb, not how many square metres it has.

Choosing between options

Three products on this site do pre-filtration duty:

ProductMedia buildTypical ratingTrade-off
Glass fibre capsule (this)Ultrafine glass fibre, three-dimensional depth0.5 – 20 µm nominalBest dirt-holding on colloids and viscous feeds; temperature and pressure follow the standard capsule shell
High-flow PP capsuleMulti-layer polypropylene microfibre, graded pores0.1 – 10 µmWider operating window (82 °C, 5.2 bar forward) and an electronic grade is available
Glass fibre pleated cartridgeSame media, pleated cartridge format0.2 – 10 µmA fixed line reusing one housing; lower cost per element

Operation & change-out

Glass fibre is hydrophilic and wets out with aqueous feeds directly; open the vent and purge the air before start-up. Depth media climbs in differential gradually rather than spiking, so judge change-out on both ΔP and flow decay, whichever arrives first.

When it serves as a prefilter, change it together with the final filter. Once the depth stage breaks through, the load stored inside it lands on the final stage all at once — and the expensive element is the one that dies first.
What fluids suit this filter?
It is designed for high-viscosity, high-load fluids and is used for serum pre-filtration, fermentation broth clarification and gas cleanup where membranes clog quickly.
How does it extend filter life?
The 3D depth structure captures particles and colloids across its layers, so as a pre-filter it greatly reduces load on downstream final membranes and extends their life.
Can it capture colloids?
Yes. The ultra-fine glass fiber media gives excellent colloid capture, suiting high-viscosity fluids with colloids and soft contaminants such as broth and serum.
